HOW TO PREPARE FOR A NEWBORN SHOOT

INTIMACY OF AN IN-HOME NEWBORN & MATERNITY PHOTOSHOOT

In-home baby and maternity photography holds a special place in my heart as it allows me to witness the beauty of motherhood in its most authentic form. From the soft glow of natural light filtering through your windows to the warmth of your favourite corner of the living room, every corner of your home tells a story - a story of love, laughter, and the precious bond between mother and child.

YOUR HOME IS PERFECT PLACE FOR PHOTOSHOOT

After ten years as a family photographer, I can honestly say that I've never entered a home where I couldn't capture stunning photographs. What's important is what appears in the frame, not the rest.

If you're concerned about preparing your home for an in-home newborn photo session, I've compiled my best tips for getting ready stress-free. With a newborn to look after, you have more important things to focus on than tidying up every corner!

SHOW ME YOUR SPACE: Before our session, I’ll ask you to send over a few photos of your space to ensure we have sufficient light—it's the light, not the decor or day-to-day mess, that’s key to capturing those enchanting family moments. Based on what I see, I might suggest tidying certain areas like the master bedroom, nursery, or living room, which we'll likely use for our photoshoot.

WINDOWS AND LIGHT: The magic happens near the windows. If you have curtains or blackout drapes, that’s fantastic! We can adjust them to modify the light, brightening or softening our setting as needed. I’ll also bring along a few elegant backdrops to quickly transform your living room into a makeshift studio.

DECLUTTER FOR PERFECTION: A little organization goes a long way. Clear off bedside and end tables. You can keep any artwork or framed photos that might add character to the shots, but tuck away those miscellaneous items—receipts, paper piles, snacks, pacifiers, and the like—out of sight.

GADGETS: Consider removing everyday items like baby monitors and diaper caddies, or any other practical objects, to create a more streamlined backdrop.

COLOUR SCHEME: Dress your sleeping areas in clean, neutral tones. Cream, soft shades of blue or beige, khaki, brick, grey, or brown—all make for stunning photo backdrops. If your usual bedding is too bold, flipping to the inside of a duvet or using a simple white sheet can work wonders. Match these backdrops with similarly coloured outfits to enhance the cohesiveness of your shoot.

GET READY TO BE CREATIVE: As we wander through your home, we’ll discover the special places that catch the light beautifully, from the cozy kitchen nook to the unexpected charm of the bathroom. These are the places where your baby will form their first memories. These photos will be more than just images; they'll be the treasured beginnings of your child's story, captured in the comfort of your own home. Let’s create a session that celebrates your family’s uniqueness—no filters needed. One day, you'll look back on this time with immense gratitude, cherishing these captured moments forever.
